Filoli!
I should title this post Lucy! because it is Lucy, Filoli's Director of Horticulture, who is adopting six incredibly lucky rescued pigeons- June Bug & Bandit, Squeak & Sesame and new couple Angel & Bo.
Filoli is an incredible home and extensive gardens (650 acres located in Woodside) that is now a property of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and is dedicated to the preservation, interpretation and stewardship of the cultural traditions and natural history of the country estate.
The orginal estate owners (both the Bourns and the Roths) kept parrots, other ornamental birds and poultry and Lucy continues this tradition by adopting rescued birds from area shelters, including chickens and roosters, ducks, doves and now pigeons from MickaCoo.
And, while I'm THRILLED that these very lucky six pigeons will have a wonderful life in the Filoli berry patch (shared with the ducks), I'm even more excited because of the opportunities that Lucy has offered MickaCoo to outreach to Filoli's members and guests about these sweet but invisible birds. Thanks to Lucy, many, many more people will learn about both the sad plight of domestic pigeons in Bay Area shelters as well as what sweet, beautiful and undemanding pets they make.
Starting this evening and continuing through the weekend, MickaCoo pigeons will be showcased at the Filoli Flower Show and MickaCoo volunteeers (thank you Cheryl, Cathy & Steve, Sherri, Shaf & Ingrid!) will be there telling guests about them as "dovecote docents".
This story is only getting started. Check back for more pictures and lots of exciting news as this amazing event unfolds.
Yay, Lucy!!
