Sam
I got an e-mail from a nice lady named Alice who helps injured pigeons near her home in the Tenderloin. She's rescued, rehabbed and released about 20 to date. She'd recently rescued a scalped and concussed blue bar feral who, after avian vet care and TLC, had recovered (though not the vision in his left eye) and was named Sam. Alice already had two unreleasable rescued pigeons living in her small apartment and Sam's very loud cooing, made in an effort to steal Mr. Stinky's hen Pearl away, was upsetting the peace. She asked if MickaCoo could take him in and find him a great home.

This is what Alice wrote about Sam:
Sam is a very sweet, shy, and cuddly male pigeon who is looking for a good home. He adores attention, especially being held and having his head rubbed. Sam was a wild pigeon who had an accident which left him blind in one eye. Now that he is blind in one eye he can not survive on his own outside and hopes to be adopted into a loving home. Sam is a bit timid but very gentlemanly and low maintenance. He is now used to living indoors and is also used to wearing a bird diaper when let out of his cage to stroll through the house. Sam enjoys being in the same room with the whole family particularly if they are watching TV. He would like to come to your home and watch TV with you.
Alice brought Sam over on Thursday June 3rd and, at first, I wasn't sure if we would be happier staying indoors or outside in the coop.

But, when we went outdoors, Sam was very clear in his preference- he was like a kid in a candy store. He went bonkers- strutting, claiming perches, challenging everybody, kicking my little Beanie Baby off her own shelf (not without a vigorous and impressive protest on Beanie's part) and just generally having a grand old time. He was like, "Oh, I OWN this joint! Buncha soft domestic pigeons- ha!"

While Alice was in sight, Sam was a very tough pij. But, after she'd left, when I went back to check on him, a little bit of the starch was out of him. He was much more circumspect, less brash. I think he's still pretty happy to be in the coop but he drew A LOT of confidence from having Alice in his flock.

I'm looking forward to when she comes back to visit Sam. I want to see if he turns back into Macho Pij again!
I think Sam's doing well even though he's clearly not as exuberant without Alice. He's not getting picked on and he's not bothering anybody and I'm kind of glad he's settled down a bit. Alice is definitely magic juice for Sam. I've not won his heart but, with the right person and time, Sam will be a great companion. He clearly knows how to make friends. Sam is available for adoption. He is currently single. E-mail me at AdoptKings@gmail.com for more info.
