Ray Ray
On January 25th, somebody unloaded two, tied-up boxes full of 12 live king pigeons and a bag of dead chickens out of the trunk of their car and abandoned them all like trash in an Oakland parking lot. Their death was averted by Oakland Parks & Rec staff who investigated and rescued the birds. They were transported to the Rotary Nature Center at Lake Merritt and the next day MickaCoo was contacted to help. (Blog post here.)
I went to assess the birds' condition on 1/27 and they were not in great shape. Many had "one-eyed colds" and foot abnormalities and most had nicks and scratches from fighting while confined in overcrowded conditions. I wormed and sprayed and Spartrixed the whole flock and then took the worst three to the vet.
Since then, the others have recovered- happy to be living in a nice, big, clean aviary and getting basic care and hygiene. On 2/8, eleven of the twelve were given a forever home by Harvest Home Animal Sanctuary but Ray Ray isn't healthy enough to join them. He's gaining weight and strength and his respiratory infection has resolved but he's still got a ways to go.
MickaCoo Pigeon & Dove Rescue is fundraising to pay for surgery to correct Ray Ray's overgrown and scarred eyelid tissue so that his vision and quality of life will be improved. Click here to see how you can donate on his behalf.
