Frankie
Frankie (originally called Madeline by his rescuer) is a really lucky bird. He's an AU ARPU 2008-hatched racer that can't fly and who's been flightless long enough that, when approached, he runs as fast as a little squirrel- doesn't even try to fly.
On 12/9, a good Samaritan found him and took him to pigeon-friendly Montclair Vet Hospital. Accidental pigeon rescuers Ingrid and Hugh were contacted via another pigeon rescuer and they took him in and then brought him to me when they took in an unwanted racer at the Hayward shelter who can fly (and is thus a better fit for their indoor office/aviary) instead. So Frankie's come to foster at my house until the right forever home is found.
His x-rays and even a second vet consultation with Dr. Speer show no explanation for his inability to fly and it is hoped that with care and nutrition, he may recover.
He's spent time outdoors in my coop but when it got colder, I brought him indoors to keep company with Louie, Dee Dee and other pij in recovery. He's currently single but is definitely looking for a mate. He prefers pigeons to people and will hide when I'm in the room with him. He's beautiful and sleek with lovely, iridescent green speckles and available for adoption.
1/28/09 Update
Frankie still can't fly and I don't know why but I'm sure he used to fly fast because he definitely runs fast now. I call him Squirrel Boy! He has taken Clarita on as his mate and they are very devoted. They take great care of their fake eggs.
My outdoor coop is overcrowded so for now they remain living in my indoor 'hospital ward' along with Dee Dee and Louie and Rio & Teddy.
Sometimes they get to go outside for a little R & R.
Frankie and Clarita are available for adoption as a mated pair. Contact me at AdoptKIngs@gmail.com for more info.
