Giovanni & Nina
Two sick baby king pigeons arrived as strays at SFACC 3/25 & 3/26 but only one was obviously ill and his symptoms caught the eye of his rescuer and the SFACC vet. They contacted me and Bay Area Bird Hospital to get recommendations for how to help him and by doing so, probably saved his life. I brought him home as a foster and named him Giovanni in honor of his rescuer. I brought the other sick baby king home too and named her Nina.
They have been a huge comfort to each other and are very good friends and crate-mates.
Giovanni's rescuer says this about how he was found-
"Giovanni was found by a young girl in an apt. courtyard on Cesar Chavez. According to the bldg. manager he was there overnight. Finally, the manager called ACC and the little girl took him to her apt. to keep him safe. When she brought him to me he was sitting on her shoulder- very sweet."
I don't know Nina's story.
The first night I brought them home was very tough. Giovanni could barely breathe and both were vomiting (an infrequent and serious symptom for a bird). All three of us were awake most of the night. Both were skinny and not eating or drinking enough. I treated them with Metronidazole for canker, Doxycycline-Tyson for respiratory infection and syringe fed watery, easily digestible and highly nutritious Tolorex (provided by my pigeon expert) until they were feeling better and eating well on their own.
They are doing great now. Nina has gained 10 grams and Giovanni 15. Their energy is up and they need more space than I have available for them and so I'm looking for a volunteer that can help. They're not well enough to go out in my coop but will be soon. If you're in the Northern California Bay Area (they're too young to safely ship) and interested in fostering (or adopting) Giovanni and Nina, please contact me at AdoptKings@gmail.com
