PIGEONS AS INDOOR PETS - THE MIRACLE OF PIGEON PANTS
Mouse over pictues for captions.
Pigeons make GREAT indoor pets. They are smart and quickly learn household routines. They are good natured, curious and easy going and bring lots of fun and affection to your life. Pigeons that would be spooky and nervous about being handled when outside in an aviary usually become very tame and friendly if they live indoors with you. And, thanks to the miracle of pigeon pantsuits, you can live very comfortably with indoor pigeons! They don't have to be confined to a cage and instead can join you around the house.
This is a guest post by Mickaboo & MickaCoo volunteer Louisa, certified vet tech and rescuer of abandoned pigeons Tina & Tony (with some added comments by me). Thank you, Louisa!
Pigeons are charming, easy going, gentle birds. They do not bite, scream, chew or destroy your furniture. Their cooing vocalizations are soft and soothing. They are not emotionally demanding, though they certainly appreciate loving kindness and interaction. They are good with children, and they will sit on your lap (and your shoulder and head and computer monitor).
The main obstacle to having pigeons as indoor pets is their droppings. As a result, they have mostly been consigned to living in coops and aviaries. These need to be fairly large if the birds are to spend their lives inside them, and they are almost always located outdoors.
Then came the invention of “Pigeon Pants”. These are adorable little harnesses which feature a “diaper” apparatus located under the vent, to catch and contain the droppings. They are easy to put on, and pigeons tolerate them very well. Now these delightful birds can spend many hours indoors with us. Once clothed, they can be set free to walk around the house, or sit with us on our laps or shoulders. The “diaper” portion needs to be changed every 2-4 hours, of course, but that is an easy task (you line their pants with half a panty-liner and then remove and replace).
It is lots of fun to watch them as they walk and flutter around, genteelly exploring their indoor habitat. Pigeon Pants are equipped with a small bell which aids in keeping track of them (plus is very cute). Once they come to know and trust you, it is easy to pick them up and cuddle them. A small leash can be attached to the Pigeon Pants, which allows you to walk around with them and to take them outdoors safely and securely without the risk of getting lost.
Photos of pigeons wearing their Pigeon Pants can be seen on the Rescue Report website and Pigeon Pants can be purchased at The Bird Boutique. They are handmade and copy the design of the original pigeon pants maker, the wonderful Boni Woodland, who invented these outfits as a way of promoting the pigeon-human bond.
Another style of bird diapers are flight suits available at www.BirdDiaper.com. These are also designed to be able to take your bird of securely outdoors with a leash and they have a diaper. Parrots generally resist these but pigeons and doves are much more accepting and adjust within minutes.
Domestic pet pigeons can live outdoors (naked) in their aviary and then spend time in the house in pant suits or live naked in their indoor cage and have lots of out-of-cage time in their pants. Pigeon pant suits are a wonderful option for anyone who wants the beauty and gentleness and charm of a pet pigeon.
There are lots and lots of beautiful, sweet, innocent domestic pigeons in need of homes. They cannot be released into the wild (they have no survival skills) and, if they are not adopted, they are euthanized! PLEASE share this story with everybody you know. Most people are completely unaware of the pet bird overpopulation crisis and don't realize that sweet birds like Rocky and Betti and Rascal and Mandee and Dovee and and and are being euthanized everyday. Please visit MickaCoo Pigeon & Dove Rescue and Pigeon Talk for more info about adopting homeless pigeons. And, if you have a pants-wearing pigeon, please post your comments and send your pictures and stories to me at AdoptKings@gmail.com.
Until there are homes for all, please- don't breed, don't buy, adopt!
