Subject: Pigeon without a wing
Hello, I found a pigeon in my yard yesterday who has had his wing taken off, I assume by a hawk attack. There are several who hunt around Potrero Hill where I live. The bird seems to be doing well. I have provided water and mixed grains (rat mix) to hold him over. I just don't know what is best for him now. Do you have any suggestions?
She passed it along to me and I called the person and sent an e-mail and then another e-mail and got no reply. Then, Tuesday afternoon, I got a call back saying he was still living in the finder's yard and that she was feeding him. His finder's daughter named him (?) Pablo. She is also the one who reminded her mom to make sure and follow up on his rescue.
Amazed that he was still alive, I went to get him and his wing has indeed been torn off, right where it joins the body. He has exposed bone and is no doubt in a lot of pain.
He had found a narrow space between their house and a wall in which to hide and was spending his time under the occasional warmth of the dryer vent and eating and drinking from what they provided.
He's very feisty (which is a great sign) and has been eating and pooping perfectly. I've started him on injectable antibiotics and pain meds and will be taking him to Dr. Speer in Oakley Thursday.
Usually, I refer rescued feral pigeons to WildCare or Montclair Vet Hospital but, since Pablo will be forever flightless, he is unreleasable and so would be euthanized. But, since he feels well enough to keep eating, is maintaining his own weight, interested in the world around him and, since pigeons make such great pets and are legal to keep as pets, MickaCoo will be paying his vet bills and finding him a home.
He needs foster care and/or an adopter. To help Pablo, go here to donate or email me at AdoptKings@gmail.com.
4/1/10 UPDATE:
While Pablo was doing a remarkable job healing his huge wound on his own, I did have him examined and the wound surgically closed by avian vet Dr. Speer.
4/7/10 UPDATE:
Pablo's wound is healing beautifully and he's even starting to grow in some new feathers around it. He's not yet healed quite enough to join the other pij in the coop but he will be very soon. In the meantime, he's eating and watching out the window and wondering what my intentions are. I wish he could tell us what happened that ended in him getting his wing torn off. His days of being and wild and free and a flyer are over but, since he is a pigeon and pigeons are brilliantly adaptable, he will adjust well to being a kept bird and make the most of his new life. To help MickaCoo with his vet bill, please make a donation here.
While Pablo's wound heals, he's living with baby king pigeons that aren't interested in nor ready for his grown up romantic ideas.
When I put him downstairs, I noticed he was very interested in the window but, with only one wing, couldn't get up to the sill to look out. I set up this rack (secured with nails so no chance of falling) as a ladder and set him on it one time and he learned immediately that he could use it as a ladder. His roommates, the baby kings Giovanni, Nina & Dixie, can fly but they like using it too.
Pablo spent a little time outside in the coop today, most of it looking at himself (and his injury?) in the mirror.
4/12/10 UPDATE:
Pablo's made great progress. He's now living full time out in the pij coop and is confident enough to strut and has even taken over Bean & Blanco's ground floor nest box. (They've moved upstairs to their fourth floor.) At first, Pablo was pretty intimidated by all the big white kings. One morning I gave him some free time out in the yard with the neighborhood ferals and he was immediately strutting and showing off for them. But when they flew off, he went to the coop and stood by the door like, "Hey, let me back in!" Then, once back in, he'd go all shy again. But now he's confident and just looking for a lady. He's got so many pin feathers coming in over his wound that I'm wondering if he might regrow himself a wing.

What a story, Pablo's. I love the accommodation you made for window access. How long does it take him to climb from floor to sill? How did the other pigeons react to him in the aviary?
Yay! I am so glad Pablo was adopted and his shoulder healed beautifully!
