Waiting List
MickaCoo Pigeon & Dove Rescue cares for as many birds as we can. (We currently have 97 pigeons and doves in foster care. Some have been with us for two years!) We are committed to high-quality rescue-to-adoption care and our capacity is not infinite. I am the sole staff person (effective 8/1 after volunteering for 5 years) and am working 10-12 hour days 7 days a week and I still can't keep up... something I can't sustain. And I'm not alone- MickaCoo is very generously supported by many volunteers! We currently have 16 foster volunteers and many other folks who help with fundraising, outreach and PR, web support, etc.
Even so, we are not able to take in every bird that needs us and we run a constant waiting list for birds needing to come into our care. Here are a few of the birds just from one shelter that are waiting...
A woman suffering from the final stages of ALS has had to surrender her beloved flock of 13 tame ringneck doves. They are beautiful and healthy. Four have been adopted but nine are still available at SFACC. They need a home!
Vermont & Burlington are two young king pigeons that were found helpless and in great danger at Stow Lake in SF on 8/20. They are at SFACC and available for adoption.
These are four of six baby king pigeons that were bought from a live poultry market and "set free" at a funeral at Holy Cross Cemetery in SF on 8/23. They stood around helpless until a Good Samaritan took them to SFACC. One has since died and the other (Gus) has been taken into MickaCoo's foster care because he was sick and facing euthanasia. (Rather than triaging in the healthiest birds, MickaCoo prioritizes the most at-risk- the sick and injured, a tradition we learned from our big sister- the parrot rescue Mickaboo Companion Bird Rescue.)
