It takes a lot of work and creativity to find homes for unwanted birds and MickaCoo Pigeon & Dove Rescue is doing lots of exciting things these days! On Saturday 4/21, six human and two pigeon volunteers joined forces to take calls for Public Television Station KRCB's Spring Auction Fundraiser at their studio in Rohnert Park.
Lovely little homing pigeon Mandee on her way to the TV studio.
The 5:30 - 11 PM shift (not counting travel time) was long and it meant having to be on TV (something none of us is particularly comfortable with) but we know that most people are completely unaware of the plight of homeless domestic (unreleasable) pigeons and doves and so we welcomed the chance to support KRCB and get some publicity for these overlooked and underserved birds.
KRCB staff did an incredible job of lining up donations to be auctioned off and we all did our best to keep up with the ever changing offerings.
The studio was a madhouse with lots of cameras, ringing phones, busy staff and us. Despite how busy they all were, everyone at KRCB made us feel very comfortable and welcome.
Special thanks to KRCB staffers Mary Bishop and David Levitt Waxman (seen above with Valiant) for helping us to take advantage of this cool opportunity.
Heartfelt thanks to MickaCoo volunteers Susie and David for connecting us to KRCB, to Cheryl, Patty, Bob, Dawnelle and Michelle for facing the cameras and the ringing phones and to new friends of MickaCoo KRCB's Mary Bishop and Rhea Clinton for making us feel so welcome. THANK YOU!
Young king pigeon bachelor Valiant and the very beautiful and sweet (and expert) Mandee did a wonderful job as ambassadors, despite the late-night overtime. Valiant still had enough energy at the very end of the night, when we were packing up to head home, to jump in the bag in an effort to retain rights to the coveted log!
THANK YOU!
Thank you to Susie for creating and sharing this video!

Birdman of long beach: Since my last 8 years has been pigeon rescue. All I can say is how proud of you girls I am for all your accomplishments for helping our little friends. If anyone around the Long Beach Ca. area finds a injured pigeon please contact me - animalrescuer131@yahoo.com - I have rescued and doctored over 3,000 pigeons off the street in the last 8 years. So many have there toes tied and are living a tortured life with no one to help them. They have to watch there toes fall off one at a time from lack of circulation. Think twice before returning banded pigeons back to racing clubs. The vast majority of the beautiful pigeons get there necks twisted when the clubs are no longer satisfied with there performance. And please judge pigeons fairly because so many were decorated war hero's. Look up war pigeons on google. Pest control companies have spread lies about pigeons for years to sell products. You will never know anyone in your lifetime that had a disease from a pigeon. I also have a beautiful rescued white king pigeon needing a home if anyone is interested. Thank you, Dan Lubniewski
To Dan, Birdman of Long Beach, thank you for the information about abuses in the pigeon racing industry and pest control abuses. These heartless people only care about making money instead of the truth or welfare of the animals. Your rescue and nuturing of thousands of injured pigeons over the years is laudable. This often calloused society needs more individuals like you and Mickacoo's Elizabeth Young who make the world a gentler and more caring place especially for our misunderstood pigeon friends. Thank you for all that you do! Sincerely, Susan Fong, caregiver of handicapped pigeons in Las Vegas, NV
