Fosters & Adopters URGENTLY Needed
MickaCoo Pigeon & Dove Rescue is completely full up with 120 birds in foster care and in need of adopters. Shelters and finders of strays continue to ask us to take in birds but we don't have the capacity. The influx of birds needing help is steady year round but adoptions slow terribly around the holidays and we won't risk shipping to long distance adopters during the winter so we must rely on local adoptions.
This is Alaska. He is a big, healthy adult king pigeon who has been at SFACC since 1/11. This poor bird is waiting patiently for a home. (Are you puzzled about where are all these king pigeons come from? Click here to learn more.)
This is Lemondrop. He (gender TBD) is a young bird and has been at SFACC since 1/10. Somebody dyed him yellow and "set him free" at McClaren Park. He was lucky enough to be taken to the animal shelter before he was killed by the many hawks, gulls, ravens, raccoons, dogs, cats, mean people, etc. that he was at risk from. He is likely the sole survivor of a whole rainbow of birds that were released there. (Why he was dyed yellow is anybody's guess.)
Lemondrop is looking much better now that the dye has washed out but he needs a home (and a new name.)
I was very happy on 2/1 when I went to meet with Eric, the Animal Care Director of SFACC, to discuss a new and much needed Lobby Foster for MickaCoo pigeons (!) but almost burst in to tears when I looked into the Small & Exotic Animals Room and saw this.
MickaCoo's foster care capacity is already stretched too thin but I found myself unable to leave two very sick babies behind.
Opal was emaciated, weak and, despite her young age, had chronic GI problems (as evidenced by her stained feathers).
Georgie looked better but his respiratory infection was so bad that his breathing was audible across the room.
I brought them home, not sure I could stabilize them, and was very fortunate to have a volunteer, Jill, who was willing to make the trip all the way from Sunol to pick them up and squeeze two more in to her foster care. Happily, these two little ones are responding to treatment and doing great. They are almost ready for adoption.
Georgie and Opal on 2/2
And much improved on 2/4!
These two baby king pigeons were surrendered to the Montclair Vet Clinic in Oakland on 2/6 and they need a home ASAP.
We have a large variety of beautiful birds in need of great homes. (See our Available Birds here.)
We work one on one with adopters to match the right birds to the right homes. Pigeons and doves make wonderful pets and can live indoors or outside (year round) in an easy-to-create aviary. They are easy to care for and they don't ask for much.
These links will provide you (and the people you reach out to) all kinds of helpful info.
Ringneck Doves as Pets (We urgently need an aviary home for a lovely flock of 12 doves!)
Donate (Money won't buy homes but it frees up time from fundraising so adopters can be developed.)
Please help! It feels good and is good.
