Persian High Flyer Update 4/20/11
The rescued Persian High Flyers are thriving in the care of MickaCoo's wonderful foster volunteer, Russ. The birds are slowly starting to spread out and take advantage of the big loft & flight combos they are being housed in and they look beautiful.
This foster flock of 211 is eating 75 pounds of pigeon feed per week. That sounds like a lot until you do the math: 75 pounds/211 birds = .35 pounds/7 days = .050 pounds of food per pigeon per day which is only one twentieth of a pound per bird per day. They'd be eating a whole lot more than that if they were king pigeons! Typically our volunteers pay for their foster birds' food but in this case MickaCoo agreed to cover the expense. These rescued pigeons are costing us $28.50/week just for feed (we've also invested in a flock treatment and 5 dozen fake eggs). If you'd like to help support this effort, please visit our DONATE link.
On Wednesday, adopters, having completed the construction of their new pigeon loft (built especially for these birds) flew out from Colorado to choose 40 of the high flyers. They were met at the airport by volunteer Zaina who devoted her day to helping the effort.
The forty pigeons were shipped 8 to a box via USPS Overnight Express and arrived safely. The high flyers and their adopters are all very happy as is MickaCoo! Forty down and 171 to go...
Actually we are placing another 12 this week (159 to go!) but there are still lots of gorgeous and very wonderful high flyers available for adoption to those who qualify. Please complete our online application if you're interested. This unique and ancient breed of pigeons has a devoted following and we are hopeful that more will reach out to save these birds.
