Abby Joins the Old Lady Pigeon's Retirement Club
Abby is a big ol' king pigeon gal who, after more than $1000 of vet bills paid by her adopter, continued to repeately experience cloacal prolapse.
Despite having successfully laid an egg between one of these bouts, her avian vet offered either a $500 hysterectomy or a $65 euthanasia as the solution for her latest prolapse. Abby's adopters were out of money and feeling very desparate but, amazingly, were able to get very generous care for Abbey at another avian vet free of charge.

Because Abby did successfully lay an egg between prolapses (sign of an intact and functioning oviduct), her new vet says that the hysterectomy wouldn't have corrected the inflamed and infected cloacal tissue that is causing the prolapsing.
She is being treated for infection, pain and swelling with the expectation that if the tissue of the cloaca can actually heal, it won't continue to prolapse.
Together, the adopter and MickaCoo decided that Abby would probably really enjoy life in the Old Lady Pigeon's Retirement Home. And, by joining old lady pigeons Louie & Dee Dee, Abby helps to provide company so as to not leave a pigeon alone in the aviary when one or the other is away at the vet.
Abby had a bit of a journey to get where she was going though, including a short stay in a volunteer's spare bathroom as well as a night on my kitchen counter.

But then, finally, she arrived in sunny Cupertino, warmly welcomed by volunteer Clare who introduced her to the 7' x 6' x 4' flight cage that would be her new, low-stress, girls only retirement home.

Abby got reacquainted with old lady pigeons Louie & Dee Dee Detroit with whom she had fostered briefly in my SF coop over a year ago.

Then she spotted the bathing options and while starting with the small, shallow bowl, quickly decided she wanted a long soak in the big bath pan.

Abby seems quite content knowing that she has an onsite nurse (Clare) and that housekeeping and meals are included (Clare). I cannot even begin to tell you how happy it makes me to see Dee Dee and Louie and now Abby serenely beating the incredible odds that were stacked against them- three old meat pigeons thrown out but safe now.
