Pierre UPDATE 5/25/10
Pierre was hobble-free for a couple of days but it looked to me like his leg was drifting out a bit rather than showing any inclination to come in so, after consulting with Dr. Speer, I hobbled him on Sunday with the help of my friend, some of that magic sticky vet wrap and tape to seal the deal.
Pierre's behaviour when his splayed leg is more appropriately positioned has reaffirmed the value of fixing it. Whenever his leg is under him enough, he begins his courting dance for Piper and coos and bows with pride and great feeling. He never does when his leg is splayed out- I guess because he can't manage the proper posture and feels that, if it can't be done right, it shouldn't be done at all.
And despite the hobble, he uses his out of cage time for all kinds of exploration and adventures with Piper.
Somehow though, Pierre kept getting the tape open and then the hobble would come apart so I went back to the drawing board. I used half of a twist tie (wrapped with vet tape for cushioning) to create a cuff for each of Pierre's legs with a piece of ribbon connecting them- shackle style.
And he and Piper resumed their daily out-of-cage time explorations... mouse over the pix below for captions.
Pierre says to please convey his heartfelt thanks to all of you.
