Hello there,
On Sunday, two domesticated white pigeons and/or doves (not quite sure which) were found in my mother's backyard. We're still not sure where they might have come from or how they ended up there. However, both appeared neglected, and one appeared to be hurt and/or in poor health. At first my mother put some food and water out for them in hopes that this would help. The sick bird did not appear to eat or drink. The pair stayed around all day and into the night, just at the base of the back patio door. Because it was so cold that night, my mother feared the birds would not survive outside. To her surprise when she opened the back door, the birds came into the house. She found that she was able to handle them relatively easily and put them in a warm safe place. She has been caring for them ever since. As of today both birds seem to be doing well, are healthy and are eating and drinking regularly. As fond as she is of them, she is elderly and lives alone, and does not feel that she can care for them long term. She asked me to help her find a safe place for them to go. We have made several phone calls around the bay area and was directed to your organization's website. We hope you can help us find a permanent home for these two very sweet birds.
Please feel free to contact me at 415.XXX.XXXX. Your assistance is so greatly appreciated.
Thank You,
Ayla

Hello, Ayla-
Thank you for contacting MickaCoo Pigeon & Dove Rescue on behalf of these vulnerable birds and please convey my heartfelt thanks to your mother for noticing their plight and for opening her heart and home to them.
Most likely they are king pigeons- a domestic breed that is sold for meat (squab) despite the fact that they are quite intelligent and full of charm and personality. You can learn more about king pigeons at my blog www.RescueReport.org. Your mother did the right thing and saved their lives. They have no survival skills and make easy prey for hawks, cats, dogs and even cruel people.
Unfortunately, MickaCoo's foster homes and local shelters are full of these sweet birds and I can't immediately offer them a home. I would though be happy to come to your mother's home, check over them, give her some info and pigeon feed and help her to care for them while we work to find them a foster or forever home.
Or, if that's not really manageable, your mom could take them into the San Francisco Animal Care & Control. They used to have to euthanize king pigeons regularly but now, with my and other MickaCoo volunteers' efforts, they usually find homes eventually. I'm attaching a flyer about king pigeons as pets and feel free to call me (or have your mother call) at (415) XXX-XXXX.
All the very best to you and yours,
Elizabeth, MickaCoo Pigeon & Dove Rescue
