Lots going on as always! On Saturday, 10/3, Dovee's rescuer and MickaCoo volunteer extraordinaire Cheryl joined me at Mickaboo's Booth for a day of rescued pet bird promotion . We were at the Prusch Farm Event in San Jose and the birds drew crowds all day. It was Dovee's first adoption fair ever as well as his first time meeting Dorsey so it was an awful lot of excitement for pigeons who love their leisure time but they both did wonderfully. Pigeons always do. Click here to see even more pictures.
Then, before heading home, we stopped at two South Bay shelters to pick up pigeons in need of rescue (see Brutis, Bandit, Austin, Jade & Mei Mei).
Despite tremendous support, MickaCoo Pigeon & Dove Rescue is facing a crisis. The number of king pigeons coming in to Bay Area shelters is much higher than the number of adoptions.
MickaCoo is turning away new intakes. Soon shelters will once again find themselves running out of space and king pigeons will once again be euthanized for lack of homes (unless shelter pigeon adoption rates can be increased).
MickaCoo has 20 amazing pigeons currently in need of forever homes. Bay Area shelters also have pigeons in need of homes, especially the Marin Humane Society which has been so generous in making space when MickaCoo cannot.
Unfortunately, MickaCoo is not alone in this crisis. I know there are lots of other rescues which are also struggling to cope with the needs of so many homeless animals. Knowing that eight million dogs and cats are euthanized in this country every year for want of a home makes me very aware of how rare and precious it is to find a great forever home for a meat pigeon.
MickaCoo has been extremely fortunate to have such generous support from all of you and has benefited from a lot of really positive publicity. I hardly feel like I can ask for more. But I am asking. MickaCoo needs more adopters (and more funds for vet care and more volunteer support but I'll save those pleas for another day). I'm not asking for folks who are already full up to take in more but please do be creative about further spreading the word about king pigeons as pets. And remember- MickaCoo ships so spread the word to your far-away friends and relatives too. Potential adopters should e-mail me at AdoptKings@gmail.com.

Tomorrow, I'm picking up three more king pigeons from SFACC (check out this cool video) and taking them, along with the other new birds, to the Marin Humane Society who is kindly making room for these birds (plus six chickens from SFACC). If they weren't, these pigeons would be euthanized because MickaCoo is full and so are the shelters. I'll be bringing home a fourth king from SFACC that has a fractured wing.
On 10/5, I was able to return a lost Birmingham Roller pigeon to its owner (thanks to its numbered leg band, the directions on Pigeon Talk and the NBRC) and that felt good. I know that if one of my birds was out there lost, I'd really hope that somebody would help it to get home safe.
