MickaCoo Pacifica!
King pigeon rescuer of Dovee and generous supporter of MickaCoo, Cheryl had added "Set up an Aviary for Foster King Pigeons" to her already full To Do list, right along with Buy a House and Move and this past Sunday, before she even finished unpacking herself (hadn't even found her shoes yet), she and her friends were transporting and assembling an aviary that has been donated to MickaCoo. It is 6' tall, 7' long and 4' wide and is now known as MickaCoo Pacifica!
Mike came back after work on Monday to finish the assembly while Cheryl and I worked on the perches and nestbox.
Mike was very gracious and patient while I held up progress by taking pictures of this caterpillar.
On Wednesday, I brought six kings (three couples) from my too-crowded loft to MickaCoo Pacifica!
Cheryl, cheerful despite the terrible addiction she was volunteering for, welcomed each bird warmly into her home and her life.
Below, from left to right, are the Pacifica Six: the gianormous and broad-shouldered but slightly timid Jazzy (husband of Tum Tum), Zoe and Dovee (newlyweds), Kizzie and his wife Millie and, on the perch above their heads, Tum Tum.
More work continues to finish the aviary this weekend.
Cheryl's fostering of these six birds is a huge relief to me and to my overcrowded loft. I'm now down to 17 birds (7 of mine and 10 fosters) and, while it is still quite a lot, it is a much better number for the size of my loft and I could feel the easing of tensions today- both mine and my pigeons. Thank you SO much, Cheryl, for being SUCH a huge help to me and supporter of MickaCoo.
Despite Cheryl's huge level of help, MickaCoo is still overfull with pigeons and I have to turn them away almost daily. There are currently six king pigeons in Bay Area shelters, that I know of.
MickaCoo needs your help, too. Volunteer. Donate. Foster. Adopt. Please go to http://www.mickacoo.org./
9/2 Update
There's been a lot of drama at MickaCoo Pacifica. Formerly rock-solid couple Jazzy & Tum Tum have been spending a lot of time apart with Jazzy home alone and little Miss Tum Tum caught repeatedly canoodiling with newlywed pigeon Dovee! Zoe's not giving up on her philandering man so easily though and is still in the running as Zoe's mate. Kizzie & Millie appear to be scandalized by the goings on and have refused to set foot in the nest box. We may reduce the number of fosters from six to four in the hopes of restoring marital bliss.
Cheryl and I finished installing the roof, she's added a back on the aviary to provide greater security and has added wheat grass and lettuce for nutritional snacking.
