February 2009 Rescue Updates
Just at the point that I was about ready to give up, thanks to a ton of help, I've been able to coordinate the rescue of a lot of birds lately. I absolutely couldn't have (and wouldn't have) done it without all the help and support from SF Animal Care & Control, Mickaboo Companion Bird Rescue, Pigeon Talk, Andy's Pet Shop, The Marin Humane Society and others- thank you!
Here are just a few of the lives we've saved.
And here are some of the staff & volunteers who work so tirelessly to help the steady stream of abandonded and neglected animals that come into SF ACC.
When SF ACC was over-full, The Marin Humane Society offered help by taking in four hens and four king pigeons.
Publicity helps in ALL kinds of ways. San Jose Mercury News Columnist Linda Goldston wrote a gorgeous article about king pigeons and MickaCoo. Read it here. And Mickaboo volunteer Katie goes to great heights (and travels long distances) to shoot poster-quality photographs for Pet Food Express' "My Mutt" program.
I've been keeping a close eye on Country since her much-loved mate Tank had to be euthanized on 1/24 (cancer). She's doing well (as far as I can tell) and spending much more time out and about in the loft. When Tank was alive she spent more time resting with him. Looking back, I can see now how he must not have been feeling well for at least the past five months.
And these gorgeous birds are Peppie and Cocoa, Amazon parrots available for adoption through Mickaboo and being fostered at Andy's Pet Shop in San Jose.

And, of course, there are always happenings in my loft. Rescued feral pigeon Charlie Brown White Socks has been released several times (even with her feral mate Slim) but she just really wants to be inside the loft and so I've brought her back in once and for all. Her mate Slim rejoined the neighborhood flock and that left her hanging around all alone. I couldn't stand it. I brought her back in and now she's paired up with king pigeon/feral cross Santino (purchased by a good samaritan from a live food market and surrendered to SF ACC last August). And Santino is SO proud and dutiful and sweet. He's just a young guy but he's already a great pigeon husband.
