August 2008 Rescue Updates

I went to SF ACC for the happy task of picking up two roosters, two chukars and a cockatiel and driving them down to San Jose-- the cockatiel to her new foster home and the fowl to another Mickaboo volunteer who was going to drive them on from SJ to their new home in San Juan Batista. Yay! It's great getting birds out of shelters and into homes. But when I walked in I was asked, "Have you heard?" and that's rarely good. Turns out some well-intentioned person saw a bunch of pigeons at a live food market at the corner of Grant and Pacific and bought them so as to set them free and spare their lives. Which she did. But then they just stood around. Because they're king pigeons, not wild pigeons. They have no place to go in the wild and no skills to survive with even if they did. Then she called SF ACC and now they're there. So while they've escaped the butcher and the dangers of the wild, they are at high risk of euthanasia unless adopters come forward.
Eleven were brought in. When I looked in on them I saw that one had labored breathing (sign of illness) and so I brought that one home to care for and foster. Just what I need. ANOTHER king pigeon. She's being treated for canker (trichomoniasis) and while still a sick little bird, canker's very treatable and I hope she'll pull through. I've named her Nicky and she's already showing a little improvement.
Visit SF ACC if you can help.

Practically a whole month has gone by since my last update or post. I'm swamped. There's "Search & Rescue" and then there's "Lost in Rescue" and that's where I'm at. For the most part everything's OK. My pigeons are good. My pets are good. Just lots and lots of animals that need help. Wonder when that's going to stop? I'm trying to raise funds for MickaCoo (many of the birds we help require vet care) and one of the ways I'm doing that is collecting pennies (or spare change) from folks. Got some? And I'm trying to find homes for a very sweet, dyed-yellow duck that's at SF ACC right now. Somebody bought him as a cute (if unnaturally colored) duckling at Easter (as a basket stuffer?) and now, surprise- he's homeless and stuck in a cage at the pound. Plus there are two lovely roosters in need of adoption. And a chukar. And a bunch of rabbits. And rats. And dogs and cats and a hermit crab. Visit SF ACC if you can help.

Every morning I put my green-cheek conure, Tookie, in his outdoor cage and out on the back deck. I also roll the budgies' (Bodie and Princess Bitsy Schoolgirl) cage out there plus, in the backyard, there's the pigeon loft and the neighborhood feral pigeons that visit and today there was also a quail named Roxy out there (being adopted from SF ACC by a Mickabooligan and briefly fostered by me) so I wasn't surprised when I came out side for another cup of coffee and found this Cooper's hawk in the middle of everybody. Luckily everybody was safe in their various enclosures (except for the feral pigeons who were long gone). Beautiful bird and I wouldn't want him to go hungry but I wouldn't want him eating my friends either. Tough world.
