May 2008 Rescue Updates
5/30/08
No adoptions (need some good ones), no new birds (trying to hold off).
Somebody pecked Alejandra near the eye on Monday and when I found her it looked so bloody and bad I thought her eye was gone but her vision's OK and she's healing.
Tony and Doll are still trying to decide which of the nine Hollywood Squares nestboxes to use and Tony's fooling around with Rocky on the side. He is such a player.
Willow's getting too big for his britches and has gone from low guy to big shot with his new found health.
Tank- big, sweet, generous, responsible, beautiful Tank has lost his lower mandible (beak) to pigeon pox and it's breaking my heart watching him try to learn to eat without it. They say he will.
I finished a 3-day series of injected treatment (Metronidazole) against Canker for all 13 birds on 5/26. We're all happy to be done with the shots, for now. Pox vaccination's are next.

Everybody's home and in the aviary.
Rocky's on the mend.
Willow's feeling great.
Louie's feeling better than she has in awhile- flapping her wings for exercise and again flying to low perches.
Much as I'd LOVE to let Country and Tank keep their eggs and raise babies, I swapped their beautiful real eggs for wooden dummy eggs yesterday.
Tony Baby and Doll are still courting.
George and Billie are sitting on dummy eggs.
Sparks and Allejandro have chosen a nest site and have most likely laid the first of their two eggs.
Blue and Rome are each keeping to themselves but doing fine.
The aviary is staying cozy and dry in the light rain we're having.
Old friends Louie and Country spent some time hanging out today.

George and Billie were the first to choose a new nest site in the aviary (third box from the left on the lower level, very secluded, no view) and have since laid eggs which I have since replaced with wooden dummy eggs. Sparks & Allejandra are courting again and looking for their new nest site. Willow is feeling much better, is always the first to the food now and has become much more confident. Blue & Rome, both single hens, are flirting a bit with the married pigeon cocks but mostly keeping to themselves. Louie seems to be doing a bit better and is even getting some attention from cock birds (a first). Rocky and Doll were playing house and Rocky even laid an egg but then she abandoned it and is now in my kitchen, not feeling well. She's listless and her breathing is a bit congested. Doll and Tony Baby are rekindling their old flame.

Around 5/5, Tank was bitten by a mosquito, contracted pigeon pox, developed an abscess on his lower mandible (beak) with infection into the bone, spent a week at the vet and is now home recuperating. His beak tissue is still at risk but he looks like he's on the mend. His mate, Country, sat on their (dummy) eggs the whole time alone and then tenderly welcomed Tank home. They're courting again and getting ready to lay a new pair of eggs.

Tony Baby, who went to the vet on 4/24 sick, full of grit (which we tested for metal content and found to be within limits) and having lost 20% of his body weight, also spent a week at the vet's. He came home, briefly relapsed, went back on antibiotics and has since recovered. He kept his head down for awhile (SO unlike him) but is now back to full strength. His marriage to Rocky didn't survive the upheaval (too bad for him because Rocky's RICH) and he's now dating Doll again. We'll see if that lasts. He's such a player.

I don't think the pij know that there's a seagull named Einstein recuperating in their old pigeon room. I wonder what they'd think if they did. They'd probably be pretty chill. King pij usually are.
