Dee Dee Detroit- In Memorium

We lost our beloved Dee Dee Detroit today to heart failure. She died in her foster mom Clare's loving arms.

Dee Dee was rescued from being euthanized at SFACC on 10/8/09. She had been found wandering and injured in the Bernal Heights district of SF on 9/28. She was not a young bird and was in rough shape.

Dee Dee recovered and took the young and very virile Peppermint as a mate.

In August of 2010, after being roughly treated for a time by her mate, she was injured and, as a result, we discovered she had been coping with heart failure.

Dee Dee had to be separated from Peppermint (and he eventually took Sparkle as his second mate).

Dee Dee recovered and, against doctor's orders, even romanced a fellow patient.

Dee Dee's frail condition and need for a very special hospice foster home inspired MickaCoo's Old Lady Pigeon Retirement Home where she, Louie and Abby have been living in peace and comfort.

Dee Dee's heart condition was managed by her foster mom Clare with daily meds and bi-monthly draining of accumulated fluid. She'd been very doing well until all of a sudden this morning she had trouble breathing. She died peacefully in the loving arms of Clare at the Santa Clara Vet Hospital this afternoon. She is missed.

These photos of Dee Dee were taken by foster volunteer Clare M. who says- She was a tough old gal with a sweet disposition. She never complained and always made the best of her situation.
